Benefits Of Watermelon for Health and Skin

Several foodstuffs are enjoyable to eat, and watermelon is surely one of these. Watermelons are tasty, mouthwatering summer fruits with many health providing elements.

Watermelon's botanical name, Catullus vulgaris, derives from the diminutive kind of citrus, making reference to the color and shape of the fruit, and vulgaris meaning typical or ordinary fruit.

Origin

Watermelon is considered to have come from southern Africa, where it is identified growing wild. It attains maximum hereditary diversity there, with juicy, bland and sour varieties. In the 19th century, Alphonse de Candolle stated the watermelon was native to tropical Africa.

Though Catullus colocynths is usually known to be an outrageous relative of watermelon and is now seen native in north and west Africa, it has been encouraged on the basis of chloroplast DNA research that the harvested and wild watermelon differed easily from a typical ancestor, possibly C. cirrhosis from Namibia.

Types of watermelon

Lots of watermelon cultivars have been produced by farmers and experts over the years; they differ highly in taste, texture, and color.

Here are some of them:

  • Sugar Baby
  • Sangria
  • Golden Midget
  • Starlight
  • Jubilee
  • Crimson Sweet
  • Sweet Favorite

Nutrients in watermelon

Watermelons are low in calories and very nourishing. Watermelon is also full lycopene, second only to tomatoes.

Latest studies suggest that lycopene, an effective antioxidant, helps prevent some types of cancer and heart problems. According to research performed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, men who used a lycopene-rich diet plan were half as likely to have a heart attack as those who had little or no lycopene in their diets plans. Watermelon is also full of vitamin C and vitamin A, by means of disease-fighting beta carotene.

Lycopene and beta carotene work in addiction to other plant chemicals not present in vitamin or mineral supplements. Watermelon also consists of potassium, which is considered to help control blood pressure and even avoid strokes. A wedge of watermelon, or about 1 2/3 cups: 92 cal. 1.77 g pro., 20.54 g carb., 1.43 g dietary fiber, 332 mg potassium, 27.46 mg. vitamin C, 1046.76 IU vitamin A.

 Benefits

Watermelons are full of several vitamins: vitamin A that helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps support immunity, recover injuries, reduce cell damage, and encourage healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps change protein to energy. Watermelon, however, has the maximum level of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable.
